The parrots featured through this site are currently in SMCPR custody and in foster care. They are currently going through: 45 Day Quarantine, 30 Evaluation, Retraining, and/or Rehabilitation. A few parrots are considered "Permanent Fosters" because we don't see at any time in the future that that parrot would be suitable for adoption (due to health, behavior, severity of past abuse/trauma, etc.). Fosters that are available for adoption will be found under listings starting with, "Now for Adoption!".
When we first take in a parrot, we place the bird into 45-Day Quarantine, unless the bird meets certain criteria to have this process waived. We do not, and can not, take in large species breeders, or possible contagious birds. We are just not equipped physically or financially to deal with either.
During the bird's first 30 days with us, the bird will undergo an evaluation in course of their temporary quarantine foster parent's routine, care and maintenance. The bird is evaluated in multiple areas- physical, health, mental, behavioral, socialization, etc. It is based on this evaluation, as well as the foster parent's opinion that help decide the course of action to take with the new foster: post for adoption, retrain, rehabilitate, or facilitate transfer to a sanctuary.
If it is determined that the bird poses a serious threat of danger to our volunteers or other birds (depends upon circumstance), we will facilitate transfer of the bird into a sanctuary where it will spend the rest of his/her days. We are a no kill rescue. If we find no unacceptable behavior, or other issues with the bird, the bird will then be posted as available for adoption. Should we find there are some issues that need to be addressed, the bird will then undergo gentle, positive, intensive, and loving retraining and/or rehabilitation.
When the issue has been resolved to SMCPR's satisfaction, the parrot will then be placed up for adoption. SMCPR wants to give each and every parrot the best chance possible at getting their loving, permanent forever home. Because of this, we don't want to place a parrot in our care up for adoption until we are absolutely sure they are ready for their forever home. We want to make sure the parrot leaves with all the tool he/she will need to succeed in their forever home, as well as you as well.
